Blogs and Podcasts I Read and Listen to Every Week

We all have our secret list of favorite blogs and podcasts we prefer. I base my preferences on whether or not I learn anything new and, especially in the case of podcasts, whether there’s an entertainment value.

Don’t get me wrong; solid information is what keeps me coming back week after week. But when it comes to podcasts, the audio has to be clear, the guests interesting, and the topics need to resonate with my struggles or interest. I listen to podcasts while I’m on the treadmill so if an episode doesn’t hold my interest sufficiently, the exercise can become unbearable.

I thought you might want to find out which bloggers and podcasters I pay close attention to. Well, here they are.

Bloggers I Read

Anne R. Allen

I adore Anne’s blog. Aside from being one smart lady, her mix of sass and education is priceless.

Buffer Blog

The folks at Buffer write in-depth posts that always teach me a new skill. I rely on this blog to keep my social media skills sharp.

BookWorks

I’m proud to be a blogger at BookWorks, but that’s not why the blog is on this list. I enjoy the other bloggers, including Penny Sansevieri, Carla King, Helen Sedwick, and Joel Friedlander, who write sharp posts. I always learn something when I read a new post, which is why I read blogs in the first place.

TheBookDesigner.com by Joel Friedlander

Blogger, author, and entrepreneur, Joel Friedlander is a masterful blogger and businessman who blogs on Mondays and has guest bloggers appear on Wednesdays. I always look forward to seeing what’s new on his site. Be sure to read his monthly reviews of book covers. You’ll learn a lot.

Jane Friedman

Jane is an author, former publisher of Writer’s Digest, and astute marketing maven. I always enjoy seeing what she has to say or one of her guest bloggers.

Podcasts I Follow

Serial

The reporters from This American Life are the hosts of this show. They dissect a story to its core, using their investigative reporter skills. If you can learn something from this podcast, it’s how to tell a story in an engaging, entertaining manner. But these stories are real so while they are entertaining, they can also be quite sad. I love this series. I’ve listened to the first two seasons and am eagerly awaiting season three.

Self-Publishing Formula Podcast

Mark Dawson and James Blatch co-host this podcast. Mark Dawson is a thriller author who hosts trainings on online advertising for indie authors. James Blatch is a former BBC News journalist who is currently writing his first novel. Together they form a formidable team.

Smarty Pants Book Marketing

Chris and Becca Syme, a mother-daughter team. Chris is a marketer and Becca is a hybrid author. Together they interview guests and share marketing strategies.

The Author Biz by Stephen Campbell

Stephen Campbell loves to analyze figures, so his guests often arrive at the show with spreadsheets noting how much they’ve spent, how much they’ve earned, and how many books they’ve sold. It’s always fun to hear about another indie author’s success.

The Creative Penn

This is my favorite podcast. I adore Joanna Penn’s personal ramblings at the beginning of the show, and she can make even the seemingly most boring topic fascinating. She’s bubbly, positive, and informative – a winning combination.

Hey, that’s right, I’m b-a-c-k!

Wow, what a year I had. I don’t know about you, but 2015 was a year of tests for me. Let me explain.

On February 1, 2015, which was Super Bowl Sunday, I fell on a wet floor and fractured my left wrist. Ouch! Right? So the treatment I received wasn’t the best, to say the least. I developed horrific nerve pain, and no one noticed in the X-rays that the bones moved out of place while I was in a cast for eight long weeks.

So I had a year of pain. Pain when I typed. Pain when I cleaned. Pain when I opened car doors. You get the idea. While I was dealing with the pain and going to physical therapy, I tripped and sprained my ankle. It was such a severe sprain they thought I’d fractured it.

By now you’re thinking I’m a klutz, right?

Then – oh, yeah, the story gets better – I had surgery on my left wrist due to the level of pain I was experiencing. Surgery went stupendously well, thanks to my incredible doctor. But I couldn’t work for two weeks and had to complete a new round of physical therapy and rehab my left arm, wrist, and hand because I didn’t have just one surgery; I had three on my left wrist, arm, and hand.

With all that happening, I had to let something go. What I let go was my podcast. And I introduced many of you to some guest bloggers.

But all that is over. Thank goodness!

During this time, I thought a lot about my podcast. Should I restart it? Should I let it go? I decided that instead of letting it go, I would change it slightly.

Before, my focus was entirely on social media. This time, I will include episodes on social media but plan to include more episodes on book publicity and bookselling strategies. Occasionally I’ll add an episode on productivity tips for authors as well as some interviews.

Before I leave you I want to talk about a strategy I’ll be implementing soon. I’m going to make one of my books on Amazon permanently free.

Follow these Steps to Make Your Book Permanently Free

Now, I know there is a lot of controversy about offering books for free. But offering books for free, whether for two or five days a year or by making them permanently free, is an excellent way to expand awareness of your books and grow your email list.

This is how you do it. In one of your books, include a link to the first book in one of your serial novels. Don’t worry if you don’t write serial novels. I don’t either, and I’m still using this method.

At the front of your book, include a graphic element and a call to action to receive the first book in your serial for free. Include a signup link. Now that link will be to your newsletter, and once the reader signs up, they’ll get a copy of the first book in one of your series.

Since I don’t write serial novels, my call to action will be to sign up for my free ebook, Twitter Just for Writers. In the future, I’ll change that call to action to the receiving another free book for free.

The next step is to upload the book to Smashwords and other ebook retailers and make the book available for free. When you finish that step, ask your readers to help you lobby Amazon to match the free price elsewhere.

Soon you should see your email list grow, and awareness of your books expand.

Social Media for Authors Podcast Returns in January

Social Media Tips for Indie Authors by Frances Caballo

Hey, I intended to restart my podcast in October. I really did.

But as John Lennon said, “If you want to make God laugh, show him your plans.”

Maybe John was quoting someone else but that’s how I remember the quote.

The podcast is being delayed further.

After a brief respite, the podcast will restart January 15, 2016. I’ll include episodes on productivity for authors, whether it’s in your author business, your writing or your social media marketing.

There will be lots of good stuff to share with you. Ideas are buzzing in my head already.

So please come back next year.

And I apologize for the delay.

There are numerous author podcasters that you as an author might enjoy. Let’s start with my all-time favorite first: Joanna Penn’s The Creative Penn Podcast.

You’ll find fresh podcasts every Monday. They include interviews, inspiration and information on writing and creativity, publishing options, book marketing, and creative entrepreneurship.

I love that before her interviews begin, Joanna always shares news and tips from the week, as well as what’s happening in her life. Her openings add a personal touch to the episodes.

Every Writer Deserves a Break

After a lot of thought and some anguish, I’m switching my podcast schedule to once a week.

Publishing a podcast can be time-consuming. On average, it takes me five hours to publish a ten- to fourteen-minute podcast episode.

Hard to believe, isn’t it?

First, I write the script. Then I record it and edit the recording. Then I upload the audio to LibSyn.com and add the show notes to my blog and create an image.

I spend 90 minutes just on the  recording and editing. And that’s an improvement; it initially took me two hours to record a ten- to fourteen-minute episode.

While it’s a time-consuming process, so far it’s been totally worth it.

But I have other goals I want to achieve. I have two books in my head that are screaming to get out. And I’m working on a free email course and a few other special projects.

Whew! Right?

So I’m going to take a one-month break from my podcast. (Yeah, I know. I’m not supposed to do that but I am.)

When I return, I’ll publish my podcast every other Friday, starting October 30, just in time for Halloween!

You’ve been awesome so far. Within the first four days of asking for reviews I received five — the number I needed to get into directories.

As wonderful as that is, to get the visibility I need for this podcast I need additional subscribers and reviews.

So anyone who subscribes, reviews and send me a screenshot of their review will still receive a free eBook of your choice — as long as it’s one that I’ve written.

Marketing the podcast has been thrilling and exhausting. It’s like launching a book.

I’ve learned a few lessons that I think can be applied to your book marketing techniques and I want to share them with you.

How to Market Your Podcast (or Books)

  1. Design your image right away. For me that meant the very first task was to create the Social Media for Authors Podcast logo. For you, as soon as you’ve firmed up your book title, have a cover designed (and let your readers vote on various versions) and start referring to your new book. Discuss challenges, obstacles, and successes.
  2. Podcasting is another form of content marketing. So create the best episodes (chapters) that you can.
  3. Ask your audience for advice. In my case, I devised a survey. You can ask for suggestions for venues or names of characters in your next book.
  4. Grow your email list.Click To Tweet. This is so important. Social media helps you cultivate relationships with your readers but email marketing allows you to communicate directly with your readers.
  5. Create a podcast page on your website. You’ll want to create a web page for each of your books. If you look at my Books Page, you’ll see a summary of each book and the option to read more about each book.
