Uncover Great Content on These 12 Websites
This application works like a regular search engine. Type in any topic you are interested in, and Addictomatic will instantly generate tweets, blogs, and posts that match your chosen keywords. For example, I typed “social media” and listed results under WordPress, FriendFeed, Ask.com, Bing News, YouTube, Google blog search, Flickr, and Delicious tags.
Created by social media megastar and venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki, this is the mother of all curation websites. You’ll find the day’s top articles here in every possible niche. This is my go-to website for finding the top stories or writing and grammar tips, social media marketing, and quotes from authors. Once you start using it, you’ll begin to rely on it.
This search engine will crawl the web for trending topics posted on social media networks. Look for information relevant to your audience. I typed the words “author marketing platform” and the results were more on target than those produced by Addict-O-Matic when I tested this phrase, however, the posts tended to be dated.
With this application, you can make both visual clips and formatted quotes from any website and then post them anywhere, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, your blog, your e-mail, or your website. The clips you collect are screenshots that link back to the source. To get started, drag the Make Clip button on the site’s home page to your browser toolbar. You won’t need to sign up to use this tool. What I love best about this app is the black Lab.
This website is designed to predict the news that you most want to see and deliver it to you. The developers who created this application refer to it as a “predictive content engine,” designed to generate personalized news feeds.
Feedly provides a magazine-style reader for your favorite blogs and integrates with social media networks. The application’s tag line is “Scrape the web. Feed your mind.” It’s also available for your iPhone, iPad, Droid, and Kindle. On your desktop computer, you can also use this application to find blogs that write about your niche. In my case, I typed “social media” and Feedly produced a stunning list of the newest blog posts on this topic.
This is a curation tool for smartphones and tablets, including the iPad. Once you install it, it will populate your news feed with new articles within the topics you follow. You can also add subscriptions to it for the New York Times and other periodicals.
This great tool will filter and sort your Twitter stream to let you know which stories are the most popular at any moment. It’s a great way to scan your news feed to find the top stories.
Meddle may be the easiest application you’ll find for curating and sharing information. Once you add the browser plug-in, you can highlight the information with your cursor, add your own comment, and share it immediately on your social media networks.
Once you sign up for this application using LinkedIn or Facebook, it will notify you when one of your friends makes news. For example, if a friend wrote a great post that gathered traction, Newsle will tell you so that you can spread the news.
Formerly known as Repinly, visit Postris to discover which images are trending on Pinterest. You can login with your Instagram, Facebook or Twitter account. Once you’re logged in, you will be prompted to designate your categories. This step was disappointing because I was limited to eight categories that didn’t meet my preferences. However, once you’re in, it’s fun to view, like and share trending images. You can even pin images to your Pinterest account. In my case, I repinned an image to Pinterest that a friend had posted on Facebook. I like how integrated this network is.
Technorati This website lists and categorizes the day’s top blogs. You can join this site, submit an application as a writer for submitting your own posts, or just use it to curate information.
Discover Content from Your Twitter and Facebook Lists
One of my go-to places for discovering great content is Twitter my account. I have 10 lists on Twitter on a variety of topics; however, the lists I use most frequently are my Writing-Publishing and Social Media lists. When I want to know what’s new, the answers are in these lists.
To create lists of your own, click the gear on your taskbar and select Lists.
Then select Create New List, name your list, describe it, and decide whether you want it to be publicly available.
Once you create a list, you can easily add people to it by click on the gear next to the follow button and clicking Add or Remove from Lists.
On Facebook, you can also create lists of pages that produce content you want to track. On your Home tab, click on Interests and then click Add Interests and insert the name of the Facebook page you want to add.
You’ve just created your own go-to lists that will make curating information easier for you.
